Border Patrol Arrests Smuggler With 42 Illegals, Most Crammed In 12×6 Utility Trailer

Talk about a disregard for human life. The smuggler locked the trailer from the outside & gave the illegals no food or water. This was most likely a cartel smuggling operation.

CALEXICO, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Centro station arrested a man suspected of smuggling 42 illegal immigrants, which most were dangerously packed in a towed utility trailer Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 8 a.m., when agents observed a man driving a Ford F-250 with an enclosed utility trailer in tow. The vehicle was traveling away from a location that is known for human and narcotic smuggling.

Border Patrol agents conducted a vehicle stop and questioned the driver as to his citizenship. The driver stated that he was a Mexican citizen and indicated to the agents that there were people inside the trailer.

Border Patrol agents inspected the vehicle and trailer, which revealed 42 undocumented immigrants, 38 of which were in the trailer. The individuals inside the trailer were without food, water, ventilation or safety restraints. Additionally, the trailer was locked from the outside leaving the individuals with no way of exiting in case of an emergency. The trailer measured 12 feet by 6 feet, forcing the 38 individuals, two being juveniles, to cram together with no room for movement.

The driver, a 31-year-old man was determined to be a Mexican national illegally present in the United States.

The driver and all 42 undocumented immigrants, which included a total of three juveniles, were placed under arrest and transported to the Calexico station for further investigation.

“These individuals were put in extreme circumstances by a callous smuggling organization,” said Acting Chief Patrol Agent Ryan J. Scudder. “In the event of an accident the amount and degree of injuries could have been catastrophic. I am so grateful that our agents were able to keep these people from harm.”

LAREDO, TEXAS – U.S. Border Patrol agents prevented two separate human smuggling attempts, on the same day, via box trucks at two different Border Patrol checkpoints in the Laredo Sector.

The first incident occurred during the early morning hours of May 23, when a box truck approached the checkpoint on Interstate Highway 35 north of Laredo. During an immigration inspection of the driver, a Service canine alerted to the vehicle. Agents discovered 13 individuals hidden inside who were all illegally present in the United States from the country of Mexico. The individuals and the driver, a U.S. Citizen, were taken into custody pending investigation.

The second incident occurred several minutes later, when agents encountered a box truck at the checkpoint west of Freer, Texas. During an immigration inspection, a Service canine alerted to the cargo area of the vehicle. Agents found an access panel that led to the discovery of an aftermarket compartment where 10 individuals were hiding. All 10 were in the country illegally and from Mexico. The individuals and the driver, a U.S. Citizen, were taken into custody pending investigation.

Despite the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, smugglers continue to endanger the lives of individuals they exploit and the health and safety of our Nation. U.S. Border Patrol agents strive to prevent the flow of illegal immigration and slow the spread of COVID-19.

SALTON CITY, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Highway 86 immigration checkpoint arrested a man suspected of smuggling 12 illegal aliens Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:40 p.m., when a man driving a grey 2007 Freightliner semi tractor-trailer approached the checkpoint. During an immigration check on the driver in primary inspection, a Border Patrol canine detection team alerted to the cargo area of the trailer. The driver was referred to secondary for further inspection.

During secondary inspection, Border Patrol agents inspected the cargo area of the tractor-trailer and discovered 12 illegal aliens locked inside with no safety restraints and no way to extricate themselves from the inside. Agents safely removed all of the subjects and conducted welfare checks.

The driver, a 36-year-old illegal alien from Mexico and 12 illegal aliens, which included 10 adult men, and 2 adult women, were placed under arrest.

The driver was processed administratively for alien smuggling and all 12 illegal aliens were expelled back to Mexico.

This incident is the seventh of its kind this year in the Imperial Valley and the second this month. On the first week of May, El Centro Sector agents discovered 6 smuggled immigrants in a hydraulic dump trailer hauled by a semi-truck.
